My Birthday Plans

I’m going to kick off my first day as a 26 year old by snowboarding, surfing and mountain biking– all in one day. My birthday is January 12. It’s a Monday

The order may or may not happen in that order. I still have to figure out how I’m going to attack it. 

I would love participants. Perhaps one per category. We’re going to have to move quick. I only have so much daylight. 

At the end of the day, I want a bonfire. Whose down?

All The Different Ways of In-N-Out

Just leaving Innout and we decided to think about all the different ways to order.

1. Animal style: grilled onions, spread, pickles
2. Protein style: lettuce wrapped
3. Whole grilled onions: onions grilled whole. Not chopped
4. Flying Dutchman: two pieces of meat and cheese.
5. Animal style fries: grilled onions, spread, cheese
6. 3 by 3: three pattys. You can get more
7. Mustard available upon request.
8. Anything else?

My favorite? Cheeseburger. Both kinds of onions. Extra lettuce.

For the last four Christmas’s, Jeff and Daniel have been flipping pancakes, grilling sausages, and pouring coffees for surfers and locals at Newport Beach’s local surf break, Blackies. 

The pancakes and sausages were a warm surprise to the cold winter morning surf. Locals and tourists gathered around the propane grill eating pancakes and catching up on holiday news and chit chat.  

This fourth annual “feed the surfers” breakfast at Blackies has no official name or title. However, the breakfast duo began feeding hungry surfers as a simple idea that grew from a conversation in a garage. They wanted to give back to the community, and this was their idea: make pancakes and feed hungry people.

“It’s fun and it’s for free,”  commented Daniel, co-founder of this annual breakfast. 

In their first year, they fed 50 people. This year, they expected to feed upwards of 200 hungry locals. They start pouring the pancake batter around 7 a.m. 

Tracy, a Newport Beach local, said, “These guys are classy surfer dudes that have a great approach to surf culture and surf culture.”

After my morning surf, I walked back up to Jeff and Daniel. They wrapped a sizzling sausage in a hot fluffy pancake, drizzled with maple syrup. 

That’s what I called getting barreled. 

Blackies, Newport Beach 12-27-08

A refreshing clean Saturday morning at Blackies. Thank God, some swell stuck around after this past week of flat, lake, clean, glassy surf. Here are some highlights from Saturday. 

Dolphin Sightings At Carpenteria

The surf was flat, but the dolphins were pumping. Amazing.
